After working on the past two Venture Up programmes, Lingy Au is stepping into the role of Programme Director for Venture Up 2018. We sat down with Lingy to hear a bit more about what makes #VU18 the programme for him.
Why are you excited to meet the #VU18 cohort?
Every group of students brings a whole new personality to the VU framework. Yet every year, there are common characteristics that individuals bond over. I cannot wait to meet the motivated, driven, young leaders who will be carefully selected for the Venture Up 2018 cohort. Why do I do it? I love celebrating and seeing the cohorts’ joy when they overcome challenges, roadblocks and have successes.
What was your favourite subject at school, and how has it helped you since leaving?
I participated in the Young Enterprise Scheme back in high school and can honestly say, it has helped shape me and where I am today. Critical thinking, problem-solving, and experiential learning are all crucial in what employers are seeking in the current job market. It has opened my eyes to a whole new world of doing business and I still use the tools I learned to this day!
What’s your leadership style and why do you think it’s effective?
It depends on the situation. Most of the time; leading by example. During Venture Up, my leadership style shifts to a coaching position where success comes from guiding others to lead for themselves. I believe an effective leader knows when to step up, and when to take the back seat and it’s this fine balance that turns good leaders to great leaders.
